Term | Definition |
Desktop | Primary user interface of a computer--when a computer starts up you will see this on the monitor |
Start Menu | Main gateway to your computer’s programs, folders, and settings |
Taskbar | The bar that spans the bottom of the screen and contains the start button on the left side and the systray on the right |
Systray | Located on the right side of the windows toolbar. It is the collection of small icons on the opposite side of the start menu. Contains volume control, date & time as the default items. |
Pin | Makes it available to open it quickly and conveniently, rather than having to look for the program in the Start Menu each time |
Jump List | Lists of recent items, such as files, folders, or websites, organized by the program that you use to open them |
Unpin | remove an item from a Jump List |
Change the order of items in a Jump List | to move an item from one place to another |
Remove an item from a Jump List | removes it entirely from the Jump List; the file is not deleted; once opened again it might reappear |
Snap to the side | arrange windows side by side; helpful when comparing two documents |
Snap Vertically | expand windows; especially helpful for reading longer documents |
Snap to the top | used to maximize a window; makes it easier to focus solely on that window with less distraction from other open windows |
Aero Shake | used to quickly minimize every open window except the one you want |
Large left pane in the Start Menu | shows a short list of programs on your computer |
Search box in start menu | allows you to look for programs and files on your computer by typing in search items |
Bottom of tight pane in start menu | where you go to log off from Windows or turn off your computer |

Personal Folder in right pane of Start Menu | named for whoever is currently logged on to Windows; contains user-specific files |
Computer in right pane of Start Menu | opens a window where you can access disk drives, cameras, printers, scanners, and other hardware connected to your computer |
Control Panel in the right pane of Start Menu | where you can customize the appearance and functionality of your computer, install or uninstall programs, set up network connections, and manage user accounts. |
Devices and Printers in right pane of Start Menu | opens a window where you can view information about the printer, mouse, and other devices installed on your computer |
Help and Support in right pane of Start Menu | where you can browse and search Help topics about using Windows and your computer |

Peek | gives you the power of x-ray vision, so you can peer past all your open windows straight to the desktop |
