| Ipse Dixit | an assertion made but not proved Example: "That's just the way it is" |
| Non Sequitur | an argument in which its conclusion does not follow from its premises. Example: Terrorists attacked America. There are terrorists in Palestine. Therefore we should attack Palestine. |
| Post Hoc/Ergo Propter Hoc | states "Since Y event followed X event, Y event must have been caused by X event." Example: "I can't help but think that you are the cause of this problem; we never had any problem with the furnace until you moved into the apartment." |
| Red Herring | a fallacy that is an irrelevant topic introduced in an argument to divert the attention of listeners or readers from the original issue. Example: I think that we should make the academic requirements stricter for students, because of our low budget. |
