network | a group or system of interconnected people or things |
networking | interaction with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts |
computer network | a group of computer systems and other computing hardware devices that are linked together through communication channels to facilitate communication and resource-sharing among a wide range of users |
LAN | a computer network limited to a small area such as an office building, university, or even a residential home |
wireless local area network (WLAN) | links two or more devices using some wireless distribution method (typically spread-spectrum or OFDM radio), and usually providing a connection through an access point to the wider Internet. |
metropolitan area network (MAN) | similar to a local area network (LAN) but spans an entire city or campus |
wide-area network | computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. Typically, a WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs). |
global area network (GAN) | refers to any network that is composed of different interconnected computer networks (WANs) and also covers an unlimited geographical area |
Internetworking | the process or technique of connecting different networks by using intermediary devices such as routers or gateway devices |
client | an application that runs on a personal computer or workstation and relies on a server to perform some operations |
host computer | a computer system that is accessed by a user working at a remote location |
wireless access point (WAP) | a hardware device or configured node on a local area network (LAN) that allows wireless capable devices and wired networks to connect through a wireless standard, including Wi-Fi or Bluetooth |
gateway | either hardware or software that acts as a bridge between two networks so that data can be transferred between a number of computers |
networking site | a website that is designed to help people communicate and share information, photographs, etc. with a group |
access point | a network access point (NAP) is a major point where internet service providers (ISPs) can connect with one another in peering arrangements |
file transfer (in networking) | a feature of a piece of software that connects two computers and allows files to pass from to the other |
download | to move information to your computer from another computer system or the Internet |
upload | to send documents or programs from your computer to a larger system using the Internet |
mirroring | creating web site that has been copied to another server in order to provide faster access or wider availability, or to reduce traffic on the network. |
network file system | a mechanism for storing files on a network. It is a distributed file system that allows users to access files and directories located on remote computers and treat those files and directories as if they were local |
time server | a server that distributes synchronized time information to all members of a network |
video server | a server that is dedicated to taking in, storing and delivering video |
remote procedure call | a network programming model or interprocess communication technique that is used for point-to-point communications between software applications |
electronic cash | a system designed to enable products to be sold at a retail outlet |
electronic commerce | the activity of buying and selling goods on the Internet |
electronic magazine | a magazine that you can read on the Internet |
navigation | a way to find and follow a path through websites |
network browser | a software program that is used for finding and looking at pages on the Internet |
browsing | the activity of looking at websites on the Internet in no particular order |
surf | to look at various places one after another on the Internet |
navigation agent | a person or a program to help to find and follow a path through websites |
