SO-DIMM (small outline DIMM) | a smaller version version of DIMM for laptops |
RIMM | an older version of DIMM |
SIMM (sinlge inline memory module) | has a different width of the data path that each type of module accommodates and the way the data moves from the system bus to the module |
synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) | the first DIMM to run synchronized with the system clock |
Double Data Rate SDRAM (DDR SDRA< or SDRAM II or DDR) | an improved version of SDRAM, it runs twice as fast as regular SDRAM |
single-sided | memory chips installed on one side of a module |
double-sided | memory chips installed on both sides of the module |
memory bank | the memory a processor addressees at one time and is 64 bits wide |
dual ranked | double sided DIMMs that provide two 64 bit memory banks |
single ranked | DIMMs that provide one 64 bit memory bank |
single channel | the memory controller can access one DIMM at a time |
dual channel | the memory controller can access two DIMM at a time |
triple channels | the memory controller can access three DIMM at a time |
ECC (error correcting code) | ECC can detect an error but not prevent it |
parity | older SIMMs used parity as their error checking system |
