What is the function of the PSU? | To convert high voltage AC current to low voltage DC current. Provides power to internal devices. |
What voltage do yellow wires inside the PC carry? | 12 volts, usually to the CPU and hard drive motors. |
What voltage do red wires inside the PC carry? | 5 volts, usually to power circuit boards and fans. |
What voltage do orange wires inside the PC carry? | 3.3 volts, usually to power circuit boards. |
What voltage do black wires inside the PC carry? | 0 volts. Black is always ground. |
What is soft power? | Used in ATX and later motherboards. When the power button is pressed the motherboard sends a signal to the PSU to turn on the rest of the computer system. Allows you to do a polite shutdown when powering off the system. |
