Opportunistic Fungi | Immunocompromised; many tissues; subcutaneous, systemic; ubiqiutous; monomorphs |
Superficial Mycoses | Infection of outer layers of skin, hair, nails; no host defense stimulation; no pain or discomfort; unsightly |
Dermatophytic Mycoses | Skin, hair, nails (deeper than superficial but not into living skin); produce secondary metabolites that irritate; itching |
Subcutaneous Mycoses | Muscle, bone, connective tissues; traumatic innoculation; usually remain localized |
Systemic Mycoses | Any tissue or organ; endemic to specific geographies; thermal dimorphs and yeasts |
Systemic Mycoses: The True, Primary Pathogens | Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Histoplasma, Paracoccidioides |
