Bit | The smallest possible unit of binary information that can be entered or stored in a computer

Peripheral Devices | Pieces of hardware that can be used for ease of input, converting output to an easily readable format, and extra storage.

CPU | Stands for Central Processing Unit. The "brain" of the computer. 3 parts: the control unit, the arithmetic logic unit, and the memory unit.

RAM | Random Access Memory: "short term" memory of the computer. Easily accessable, and resets when computer is shut down.

ROM | Read-Only Memory: Data installed by the manufacturer. Inaccessable by the user. Instructs the computer on automatic operations like booting up.

Input Devices | Hardware that allows data to be entered into the computer. ex: keyboard, mouse, digital camera, scanner, video or audio recorder, webcam.

Output Devices | Converts data into a format that is useful to the user. ex: monitor, printer, speakers, etc.

USB | Universal Serial Bus port. A port that is accessable to many input and output devices and provides for quick transmission of data.

Storage Devices | Hardware that can keep data for long periods of time. Can be internal or external. ex: hard drive, zip drive, flash drive, SD card, etc.

Ethernet Port | Port that allows for high speed transfer of data to and from the internet or a smaller network.

Port | Connection point in a computer that allows for exchange of data between the computer and devices or a network.

Touch Screen | Hardware that serves the function of monitor as well as input device. User touches the screen in indicated areas to input data and make selections.

Processor Speed | Indicator of the speed at which data is transfered in and out of memory.

Gigabyte | A unit of measurement of binary information. Represents 10^9 or 1,000,000,000 bytes.

Computer System | Includes the CPU and all peripheral devices. Receives, processes, and outputs information.
