|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What are the features of a High level language? | Aimed at humans/programmers
English like syntax
Hardware independent/portable
Needs to be translated into machine code before it can be run by the computer.
🗑
|
||||
| What is Assembly language? | Type of low level language
Made of mnemonics
Each instruction translates directly to machine code
Suitable for systems where efficiency or size of code are important
🗑
|
||||
| What is Machine code? | Code executed by CPU/ not readily understandable by humans
Binary instructions
Specific to particular type of computer/not portable
Does not need to be translated to be understood by CPU
🗑
|
||||
| What is a Translator? | Translates source code written in a
high level language into machine code.
Two types: compiler & interpreter
🗑
|
||||
| What is a Compiler? | Translates the whole program as a complete unit into machine code.
…the machine code is saved as an executable file (EXE)
…errors are all reported at the end
…compiler doesn’t need to be present to run the executable file
(end user does not need compiler)
🗑
|
||||
| What is an Interpreter? | Translates one line of high level code at a time
… and executes it line by line (does not create executable file)
… stops when it finds an error
… can be resumed
It is quicker to re-interpret than to re-compile but interpreter ALWAYS needs to be present to run the code
🗑
|
||||
| What is an IDE? | Integrated development environment.
The program you use to write code.
Features include:
Code editors.
Error diagnostics.
Run-time environment.
Translator.
🗑
|
||||
| What are the Features of an IDE that help you write your program? | Editor—enables code to be entered –highlight keywords and colouring code.
Error diagnostics—Highlight syntax errors in the code, error messages—line number, type etc.
Breakpoints to stop code at a certain point.
Watch windows—check value of variables
Stepping—execute program line by line
🗑
|
||||
| When would it be an advantage to program in low level code. | The code is more efficient so less RAM will be used and less processing power. Low level code doesn't need to be translated.
🗑
|
||||
| How does the IDE provide error diagnostics? | Tells you what line number your error is on. Underlines errors. Describes the error with the location.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.
You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.
Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
If you know all the data on any row, you can temporarily remove it by tapping the trash can to the right of the row.
