Term
Definition
Plant   Multicellular, eukaryotic organisms that makes their own sugar from sunlight through photosynthesis,
🗑
Leaf   The part of a plant that absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis. Often covered in a waxy layer to reduce evaporation.
🗑
Stem   The part of a plant that supports the plant as it grows. It moves water and sugar throughout the plant.
🗑
Roots   The part of the plant that absorbs water from the soil. Also anchors the plant into the ground, and holds the soil in place to reduce erosion.
🗑
Erosion   The removal of soil by wind, rain, running water, or other sources.
🗑
Seed   The protective shell of a plant embryo. Seeds are formed when a flower is pollinated.
🗑
Fruit   The tissue that surrounds the seed. Fruits usually help the seed move (seed dispersal) in some way.
🗑
Flower   The reproductive structures of plants.
🗑
Petal   Brightly colored parts of a flower that attract pollinators like bees and birds
🗑
Sepal   Leaves that surround and protect a growing flower bud
🗑
Stamen   The part of the flower that produces pollen (the male gamete in plants)
🗑
Pistil   The part of the flower that produces eggs (the female gamete in plants)
🗑
Ovary   Part of the pistil, After the egg becomes pollinated, the ovary becomes a fruit.
🗑
Seed dispersal   The way plants get their seeds to spread far away from where the parent plant is growing.
🗑
Seed dispersal- wind   As the wind blows, it carries the seeds to new locations
🗑
Seed dispersal- water   Seeds float in moving water to reach new locations
🗑
Seed dispersal- animals   Seeds that rely on animals to move them to a new place.
🗑
Seed dispersal- expulsion   Pressure builds up inside of plants until they explode, which launches seeds to new places.
🗑
Germination   The process of a plant embryo breaking out of the seed. Creates a root that grows downwards and a stem and leaf that grow upwards.
🗑
Sprout/sapling   A baby plant that has successfully germinated and started to grow.
🗑
Mature plant   As time passes, the plant continues to grow and develop. It is considered mature when it begins to produce flowers.
🗑
Pollination   The process of plant pollen being combined with ovules. This is how plants reproduce.
🗑
Seed creation   Following successful pollination, a seed is created with the plant embryo inside.
