| Act | A main division of drama. Shakespeare's plays consist of five acts with each act subdivided into scenes.

| Scene | A small unit of play in which there is no shift in locale or time.

| Aside | A brief remark made by a character and intended to be heard by the audience but not by the other characters.

||||
| Foreshadowing | A hint of what is to come in the story. The technique of dropping hints or suggesting that lead the reader or audience to anticipate what may happen.

| Soliloquy | A speech given by a character alone on a stage. The purpose of a soliloquy is to let the audience know what the character is thinking and feeling.

| Tragedy | A type of drama of human conflict which ends in defeat and suffering. Often the main character has a tragic flaw. Sometimes the conflict is with forces beyond the control of the character.

| Tragic Flaw | Weakness in a character who shows errors in judgment usually due to an obsession with power.
🗑
|
||||
| Tragic Hero | Usually a basically good and admirable person who fails in opposing the forces that contribute to his fatal end. This person has the potential for greatness but is blinded by his greed and need for power.

||||
| Protagonist | Hero, usually the main character who faces a problem, and in their attempt to solve it becomes involved in a conflict with opposing forces.

||||
| Antagonist | Villain, the force that opposes the protagonist. This person may be some weakness, desire or belief within the protagonist.

||||
| Exposition | Describes the mood and conditions existing in the beginning of the plot. It presents the main character(s) and their conflict.

| Rising Action | The series of events that lead up to the climax.
🗑
|
||||
| Climax | It is the turning point of the play. In Shakespeare the hero moves to his inevitable end.

|
||||
| Falling Action | Includes events from the time of the climax up to the hero's death. The episodes will show both advances and declines in the various forces acting upon the hero.

| Resolution | It is the conclusion, which in tragedies includes the catastrophe of the hero. The catastrophe shows the necessary consequences of the hero's previous actions which must be the hero's death.

| Triumvirate | A three-man government

||||
| Tyranny | A government in which absolute power is held by a single ruler.
🗑
|
||||
| Tyrant | An absolute ruler unrestrained by law or constitution.
🗑
