Term
Definition
water vapor   water in the form of a gas
🗑
groundwater   water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground rock layers
🗑
water cycle   when water moves through bodies of water, land, and living things
🗑
evaporation   liquid molecules turn to a gas
🗑
transpiration   process by which water is given off through the leaves of plants as water vapor
🗑
precipitation   water that falls to the Earth
🗑
irrigation   process of supplying water to areas of dry land in order to make the land suitable for growing crops
🗑
photosynthesis   process where plants use Carbon Dioxide, water, and energy from the sun to make food
🗑
habitat   the place where an organism lives - this place provides all of the things that it needs to survive
🗑
tributary   smaller streams and rivers that feed into a main river or larger body of water - it contributes water to the larger body of water
🗑
watershed   the LAND AREA that supplies water to a river system-also known as a drainage basin
🗑
divide   place where one watershed (land area) is SEPARATED from another (often a mountain range)
🗑
levee   natural - ridge made up of sediment deposit along a river bank man made-constructed along the edge of water to make the bank taller and prevent flooding
🗑
reservoir   a lake that stores water for human use
🗑
eutrophication   the process by which nutrients build up in a lake over many years (this is bad because it will eventually cause the lake to dry up)
🗑
pores   different sized SPACES between the particles of soil and rock
🗑
permeable   this describes a material that allows water to easily pass through or permeate, usually close to the surface (ex.: sand or gravel)
🗑
impermeable   this describes a material that water CANNOT pass through easily - this is usually deeper under the surface (ex.: clay or granite)
🗑
saturated zone   the area of permeable rock or soil that is TOTALLY FILLED WITH WATER
🗑
water table   the top of the saturated zone - the water level
🗑
unsaturated zone   layer of rocks and soil ABOVE the water table that is NOT completely full of water
🗑
aquifer   any underground layer of rock that holds water
🗑
spring   occurs when the water table meets the ground surface - groundwater bubbles or flows out of cracks in the rock
🗑
recharge   NEW water that enters the aquifer from the surface - replenishes and refills the aquifer
🗑
Artesian well   a well in which water rises on its own because of the pressure within the aquifer - it does not require a pump
🗑
wetland   area of land covered by a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year - protect shores from waves, absorb pollutants, improve water quality, and contain a wide diversity of life
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.

To hide a column, click on the column name.
