dynamic microphone   Microphones that convert sound into an electrical signal by means of electromagnetism.

lavalier microphone   A small microphone used for television, theatre, and public speaking applications in order to allow for hands-free operation.

PZM or boundary microphone   is a small omnidirectional condenser mic capsule positioned near or flush with a boundary (surface).

parabolic microphone   A mic that used a parabolic reflector in order to grab sounds and focus the sound waves onto a receiver.

built in microphone   A microphone that is integrated in your system from the get go.

boom microphone   A heavy microphone carried by a tall long pole and held overhead usually used on a set for film to television.

condenser microphone   A microphone that uses a capacitor to convert acoustical energy into electrical energy. This brings a stronger audio signal than a dynamic mic.

narration   Someone who delivers commentary alongside a movie, broadcast, piece of music, etc.

voice over   A form of narration in a movie or broadcast where an image of the speaker isn't provided or shown.

dialogue   A conversation between two or more persons

sound effects   a sound other than speech or music made artificially for use in a play, movie, or other broadcast production.

natural sound   sounds produced by natural sources in their normal soundscape.

foley sound   the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass.

sweetened sound   subtly mixing an additional sound to a pre-existing sound to "sweeten" the pre-existing sound.

library sound   A collection of sounds stored on a file like CDs, DVDs, or digital audio files.

synthesized sound   Sound created by using electronic instruments called synthesizers used in performances and recording of music.

music   vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

equalization   s the reversal of distortion incurred by a signal transmitted through a channel. Equalizers are used to render the frequency response—for instance of a telephone line—flat from end-to-end.

pick up pattern   The sensitivity to sound relative to the direction/angle in which the sound arrives and is received. Basically how well the microphone can hear sounds from different directions.

XLR cable   A style of electrical connector, primarily found on professional audio, video, and stage lighting equipment. The connectors are circular in design and have between 3 and 7 pins.

BNC cable   A miniature quick connect/disconnect radio frequency connector used for coaxial cable.

RCA cable   The standard red, white, and yellow cables used to connect a variety of audio and video devices, such as camcorders to TVs or stereos to speakers.
