network   Two or more computers or other devices, connected by one or more communications media, such as wires, telephone lines, and wireless signals.

analog data   Continuously variable data, such as a sound wave.

digital data   A precise data representation using numeric values.

bandwidth   The overall throughput per second of a transmission medium.

broadband medium   A communications medium capable of carrying at least 256 Kbps.

narrowband medium   A communications medium that carries less Kbps per second than the broadband medium (such as a dial-up modem, which carries data at no more than 56 Kbps).

serial transmission   A form of data transmission that sends one bit at a time.

parallel transmission   A form of data transmission that sends several related bits at a time.

simplex transmission   Data transmission that occurs in only one direction.

half-duplex transmission   Data transmission that occurs in two directions but not simultaneously. For example, a CB radio or walkie-talkie allows only one person to speak at a time on any particular channel.

full-duplex transmission   Data transmission in which data is exchanged in both directions simultaneously, such as when two people talk on the telephone and both people are able to speak and hear at the same time.

multiplexing   A method by which multiple data streams (either analog or digital) are combined and carried on a single wire.
