Input Device   Any piece of hardware that allows the user to enter commands or data into the computer

Output Device   Any piece of computer hardware that sends information from the computer to the user

Binary   Language, consisting of 1's and 0's, that programmers use to tell the computer how and when to turn it's switches on and off

Bit   Smallest unit of computer memory

Byte   8 bits

Read Only Memory (ROM)   Long-term memory of a computer

Random Access Memory (RAM)   Short-term memory of a computer

Central Processing Unit   The "brain" of the computer. Responsible for interpreting and following commands from the computer's hardware and software.

Extension   Three or four letters at the end of a file name that tells what type of software can open it
