Cloud   A metaphor for a global network, first used in reference to the telephone network and now commonly used to represent the Internet.

Cloud Computing   Cloud computing, often referred to as simply “the cloud,” is the delivery of on-demand computing resources—everything from applications to data centres—over the Internet on a pay-for-use basis.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)   Cloud platform services, whereby the computing platform (operating system and associated services) is delivered as a service over the internet by the provider.

Software as a Service (SaaS)   Cloud application services, whereby applications are delivered over the internet by the provider so the applications don't have to be purchased, installed, and run on the customer's computers.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Hardware as a Service (HaaS)   Cloud infrastructure services in which a virtualized environment is delivered as a service by the cloud provider. This infrastructure can include servers, network equipment, and software, including a complete desktop environment such as Windows or Linux.

Cloud portability   The ability to move applications and data from one cloud provider to another.

Cloud provider   A company that provides cloud-based platform, infrastructure, application, or storage services to other organizations and/or individuals, usually for a fee.

Public Cloud   Owned, operated by companies that use them to offer rapid access to affordable computing resources to other organizations/individuals. With PC services, users don’t need to purchase h/w, s/w or supporting infrastructure, which is owned, managed by provide
