network service provider (NSP)   Providers of high-capacity Internet access. Other organizations, including ISPs, purchase bandwidth from NSPs.

Internet service provider (ISP)   An organization that provides user access to the Internet, usually charging a subscription fee.

Internet exchange point (IXP)   A physical connection through which an ISP may share data with other ISPs and networks.

point of presence (POP)   A connection through which an ISP provides Internet connections to customers.

value-added network (VAN)   A large ISP that provides specialized service or content, such as reports from a news service or access to a legal database.

Kbps (kilobit per second)   A data transfer rate equal to about 1,000 bits per second.

digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service   A form of broadband delivered over standard telephone lines. DSL is as fast as cable modem service and provides simultaneous web access and telephone use, but has limited availability.

Wi-Fi hotspot   A location with a wireless access point for connecting to the Internet via a mobile computer or device, often found in public places such as coffee shops and airports.

tethering   A setup where you use your smartphone as a hotspot when you need only a single Internet connection while on the go.

Gbps (gigabit per second)   A data transfer rate equal to about a billion bits per second.
