Question
Answer
Phonetic Context   how we produce any single phoneme during speech is dependent upon: -Where you’re coming from -Where you’re going to next -It depends on the preceding and following phonemes
🗑
Overlapping Movements   -When we produce a word or phrase, we do not pre-plan each phoneme individually. -Rather an entire strings or sequences of phonemes must be pre-planned as a group
🗑
Assimilation   -refers to how a phoneme is changed to another phoneme due to surrounding sounds. (ex: I want you becomes I wantchu)
🗑
Co-Articulation   -Refers to how a phone is produced differently due to surrounding sounds, but still remains the same phoneme. (ex: The /k/ in cat is produced differently than the /k/ in /skat/ or /back/.
🗑
Two Types of Co-Articulation   .Backward Co-Artic .Forward Co-Artic
🗑
Backward Co-Articulation   -Where the characteristics of one phone can be observed in later phones in the string. -i.e., a later sound contains characteristics (is affected by) an earlier sound. -“Left-to-Right Co-Articulation”
🗑
Causes of Backward Co-Articulation   1.Inertia 2.Time constraints 3.Mechanical constraints
🗑
Forward Co-Articulation   -Where a preceding phone is influenced by the production of a later-occurring phone. -i.e., a phone contains characteristics of a sound to be produced later in the string. -“Right-to-Left Co-Articulation”
🗑
Cause of Forward Co-Articulation   Anticipation
🗑
Co-Articulation is not influenced by syllable or word boundaries. True or false?   true
🗑
How far can the speech production mechanism look ahead?   It will look ahead until it reaches the next contradictory gesture
