EDEMA Control   Use AROM full and firm   Repetitive isotonic contractions   Elevation/ hand on pillow/ above heart ( avoid slings- prevents movement and decreases BP)   Compression ( gloves/ coban)   Massage ( move fluid up the arm to heart-MEM)   Contrast baths and ICE

EDEMA   Collection of fluid in the interstitial space causing swelling

Types of edema   pitting edema- caused by circulatory conditions/ leaves a mark   Brawny edema- has been there for a long time and turned hard/ more difficult to work with

Reasons for edema   Circulatory conditions   Kidney failure   Inflamation after surgery or after masectomy ( kymph was removed)   Malnutrition   Burns or trauma   Diagnosis with rom limitations ( arthritis,, fractures)

what does edema cause   Decrease rom   Flat hand   Lack of mobility= disuse= further atrophy

Measuring EDEMA   For baseline of treatment   See if better or worse based on activity and hand positioning   Compare measurments of unaffected limb to affected limb   Compare limb to itself at different times of day

Ways to measure   Volume measurment (ml)( not appropriate for open hand wound, external fixated device, plaster of paris cast   Circumferential measurement using tape measure or ring sizer ( don't do it too tight, make sure on same spot, use cloth not metal)
