embedded object | An object that has been inserted into a software file using object linking and embedding (OLE) technology, where the object is not connected to the object in the source file and therefore will not be altered when the source file is changed. |
shared feature | A small application that cannot run on its own, but that allows suites of software products to share functionality, such as diagramming or drawing. |
file extension | The part of a file name that identifies the program that is to launch when the file is double-clicked. Commonly a set of 3 or 4 characters following a period at the end of the file name. For example, for the file index.htm, “htm” is the extension. |
