Cell Processes
Flashcards for Cellular Processes
Word | Definition |
---|---|
Photosynthesis | Process where plants use carbon dioxide, water and the sun's energy to make food |
Pigments | Molecules that absorb light energy |
Chloroplasts | The organelle in the plant cell where food is made |
Glucose | Simple sugar molecule |
Cellular Respiration | A process where both plant and animal cells use oxygen to break down food for energy |
Fermentation | A process where cells do not use oxygen to break down food for energy |
ATP | The energy molecule |
Lactic Acid | The byproduct of fermentation |
Chlorophyll | The main pigment in chloroplasts used to capture light energy from the sun |
Transpiration | The loss of water from leaves. |
permeable | a membrane that allows material to move through it |
endocytosis | a process inwhihc a substance is taken in to a cell by surrounding it with the membrane forming a vesicle |
exocytosis | a process in which a vesicle fuses with the membrane of a cell and its contents enter the cell |
active transport | the movement of substances through a cell membrane using energy |
passive transport | the movement of substances through a cell membrane without using energy |
diffusion | a process where molecules spread away from area of higher concentration to one of lower concentration |
osmosis | diffusion of substances across a cell membrane |
metabolism | the total of all chemical reactions in an organism |
inorganic | a compound that does not consist of carbon |
organic | a compound that consists of carbon and other elements |
molecule | two or more atoms bonded together chemically |
