Natural Selection & Adaptation

Gene Frequency The percentage of an allele in a gene pool or in a population
Evolution Change in gene frequency over time; descendents have different traits to ancestors
Natural Selection A mechanism of evolution; survival of the fittest; adaptations change the survival of a population
Gene Pool Total number of genes in a population
Variation Genetic differences in a population
Adaptation Traits that are beneficial for the survival and reproduction in organisms
Mutation Change in genetic material; mechanism of evolution
Differential Reproductive Success Difference between individuals in a given generation and how many offspring they are able to leave
Gene Flow Mechanism of evolution that introduces alleles through migration
Genetic Drift Mechanism of evolution that is random and can lead to decrease in genetic variation
Recombination Rearrangement of genetic material; mechanism of evolution
Competition Factor for Natural selection; organisms “fight” for the limited resources
