Ch 8 metabolism
Key terms
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Metabolism | The totality of an organism's chemical reactions |
| Metabolic pathway | Begins with a specific molecule, which is then altered in a series of defined steps, resulting in a certain product |
| Catabolic pathways | Release energy by breaking down complex molecule to simpler compounds |
| Anabolic pathways | Consume energy to build complicated molecules from simpler ones |
| Frist law of thermodynamics | The energy of the universe is constant. Energy can be transferred and transformed but it cannot be created or destroyed |
| Entropy | A measure of disorder |
| Second law of thermodynamics | Every energy transfer or transformation increases the entropy of the universe |
| Free energy | The portion of a system's energy that can perform work when temperature and pressure are uniform throughout the system |
| Equilibrium | The forward and backward reactions occur at the same rate |
| Exergonic reaction | Net release of free energy (-G) |
| Endergonic reaction | Absorbs free enrgy from surroundings |
| Phosphorylated | Recipient of the phosphate group |
| Activation energy | The initial investment of energy for starting a reaction |
