Microscope
Parts and Functions
| Microscope Part | Function |
|---|---|
| Ocular Lens | A lens located in the eyepiece. In our microscope this part magnifies 10x. |
| Body Tube | Connects the ocular lens in the eyepiece to the objective lenses. |
| Revolving Nosepiece | Rotates to switch the objective lenses. |
| Low Objective Lens (Low Power) | The shortest lens and the furthest from the stage. This lens has the shortest magnifying power. (4x on our microscope) |
| Middle Objective Lens | Located on the nosepiece. It magnifies10x. |
| High Objective Lens (High Power) | The longest lens on the nosepiece and the closest to the stage, therefore you cannot use this objective lens with the coarse adjustment. It magnifies 40x. |
| Stage | The platform to place the slide. |
| Stage Clips | Metal clips that hold the slide in place on the stage. |
| Light Source | Needed to illuminate the specimen. In most microscopes it is a bulb but in others it is a mirror and you need to use an artificial light. |
| Arm | Used to support and carry the microscope. |
| Base | Used to support and carry the microscope. |
| Eyepiece | The location that you look into the microscope. It contains the ocular lens. |
| Coarse Adjustment | The larger knob on the side of the microscope used to focus and locate the specimen. This can only be used when in low power (4x or 10x) |
| Fine Adjustment | The smaller knob on the side of the microscope that is used to "fine tune" or sharpen the image after focusing with the coarse adjustment. |
