down feather A short, fluffy feather next to a birds skin that insulates the bird by holding warm air close to its body.
contour feather A long feather that covers and helps insulate a bird, gives it a streamlines shape, repels water, and aids in flight.
air sac One of a series of hollow chambers connected to a bird's respiritory system that allows for a fresh supply of oxygen during both inhalation and exhalation.
mammary gland An organ in mammals that produces milk to nourish young.
placental mammal An endothermic vertebrate that as an embryo receives food and oxygen and has wastes removed through the placenta of the mother.
placenta A structure attached to the wall of the uterus in which the mother's and the embryo's blood vessels pass near each other and exchange nutrients and waste.
umbilical cord A structure that connects a developing embryo to the placenta and that has blood vessels for the exchange of food, wastes, oxygen, and carbon dioxide with the mother.
monotreme A mammal that reproduces by laying eggs.
marsupial A mammal whose young develop in a pouch.
