Terms for chapter one section three: Modern Biology

QuestionAnswer
Organic Compound Any compound contaniing carbon atoms.Most matter in living organisms that is not water is made of organic compounds
Functional Groups Clusters of atoms that influence the characteristics of the molecules they compose and the chemical reactions the molecules undergo.
Monomer A smaller, simpler molecule.
Polymer A molecule that consists of repeated, linked units.The units may be identical, or structurally related.
Macromolecules Large polymers. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are examples of marcomolecules.
Condensation Reaction When monomers link to form polymers through a chemical reaction.
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) A certain compound that stores a large amount of energy in it's overall structure.
