Plant and Animal Cells

What is a cell? The basic Basic structural unit of all organisms
What are organelles? Cell organs
Cell Wall *Protects and supports the cell/separates the inside of the cell form the outside of the cell. (Plant)
Cell Membrane *Controls which substances move in and out of the cell (Both)
Nucleus *The "brain" of the cell; controls all activities contains DNA. (Both)
Nuclear Envelope Protects the nucleus, has pores in it. (Both)
Chromatin Strand of DNA located here (Both)
DNA Written Instructions for how the cell works, grows etc.
Nucleolus Makes Ribosomes (both)
Cytoplasm *Gel-like substances that everything floats in.(Both)
Mitochondria *Takes food and turns it into energy for the organism. Known as the powerhouse of the cell.(Both)
Endoplasmic Reticulum Transports proteins and materials form one part of the cell to another.(Both)
Ribosomes Produces Proteins.(Both)
Golgi Bodies Packages and ships proteins and other materials around the body.(Both)
Chloroplasts *Captures the suns energy and makes food for the plant.(Plant)
Vacuoles Stores water.(Both)
Lysosomes Breaks downs waste.(Both)
Define Permeable Descriptor of cell membrane. The process by which the cell membrane determines which substances get though and which do not.
Describe the difference between osmosis and diffusion. Both process' describe the movement of molecules form a high concentration to a low concentration; Osmosis deals with only water.
Give one example of an effect of osmosis. Water moves into and out of cells to keep the body hydrated.
