Why and how do leaves change color in the fall? Reduced daylength leads to... Less chlorophyll produced... Allowing the hidden pigments to be visible.
What color does the chlorophyll pigment chlorophyll give to leaves? green
What color(s) does the anthocyanin pigment give to leaves? red &/or purple
What color does the carotenoid pigment give to leaves? orange
What color does the xanthophyll pigment give to leaves? yellow
What effect would a drought have upon the color of fall leaves? Colors will be delayed
What effect would a warm, wet fall have on the vibrancy of fall leaf colors? Colors will be dull and less vibrant
What effect would hot days and cool nights have on the color of leaves. More reds may be visible
What environmental conditions will promote pigment production in leaves? Cooler temps. in the summer or a warm, wet spring
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis? carbon dioxide (CO2) + water (H2O) + sunlight will produce glucose sugar (C6H12O6) + oxygen(O2)
What color does the tannin pigment give to leaves? brown
