911 Routed through a Public Safety Answering Point Dispatchers can determine appropriate services to activate
PSAP Public Safety Answering Point
Dispatcher Usually trained in EMS, can offer direction or advice to caller while waiting for rescuer(s) to arrive
Benefits of universal number Often staffed by trained dispatchers Saves time Easily remembered
Enhanced 911 Enhanced 911 is a specialized system that can locate the address of the caller even if the caller is not able to provide it
Non 911 in some areas 911 is not available. Callers either dial a number to a dispatch center, or call directly to the service they need (police, fire, ambulance)
