Terms for chapter one section two: Modern Biology

QuestionAnswer
Domain The broadest catergory in a modern taxonomic system. This is the catergory that contains kingdoms.
Kingdom In a traditional taxonomic system, the highest taxonomic catergory, which contains a group of similar phyla.
Ecology The branch of biology that studies organisims interacting with each other and with the environment.
Ecosystem A community of living species and their physical environments.
Evolution The process in which the inherited characteristics within populations change over generations, such that genetically distinct populations and new species can develop.
Natural Selection The theory that organisms that have that have certain favorable traits are better able to survive and reproduce successfully than organisms that lack these traits.
Adaptation A trait that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce.
