| Domain | The broadest catergory in a modern taxonomic system. This is the catergory that contains kingdoms. |
| Kingdom | In a traditional taxonomic system, the highest taxonomic catergory, which contains a group of similar phyla. |
| Ecology | The branch of biology that studies organisims interacting with each other and with the environment. |
| Ecosystem | A community of living species and their physical environments. |
| Evolution | The process in which the inherited characteristics within populations change over generations, such that genetically distinct populations and new species can develop. |
| Natural Selection | The theory that organisms that have that have certain favorable traits are better able to survive and reproduce successfully than organisms that lack these traits. |
| Adaptation | A trait that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce. |
