| biotic | The living factors in an ecosystem. |
| abiotic | The non-living factors in an ecosystem. |
| specie (organism) | an organism that can mate to produce fertile offspring. |
| population | All members of the same species that live together |
| community | All populations species that live and interact in an area. |
| ecosystem | A community of organisms and their abiotic, or nonliving, environment. |
| biosphere | Part of earth that life exists |
| herbivore | consumer that eats only plants. |
| carnivore | consumer that eats only animals. |
| omnivore | consumer that eats plants and animals |
| decomposer | organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and returning important nutrients to the soil. |
| scavenger | A carnivore that feeds on dead organis material |
| food chain | diagram that shows how energy in food flows from one organism to another. |
| food web | diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. |
| energy pyramid | A triangular diagram that show an ecosystem’s loss of energy. |
