ecology The study of the interaction of organisms with one another and with the environment.
biotic The living factors in an ecosystem.
abiotic The non-living factors in an ecosystem.
specie (organism) an organism that can mate to produce fertile offspring.
population All members of the same species that live together
community All populations species that live and interact in an area.
ecosystem A community of organisms and their abiotic, or nonliving, environment.
biosphere Part of earth that life exists
herbivore consumer that eats only plants.
carnivore consumer that eats only animals.
omnivore consumer that eats plants and animals
decomposer organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and returning important nutrients to the soil.
scavenger A carnivore that feeds on dead organis material
food chain diagram that shows how energy in food flows from one organism to another.
food web diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem.
energy pyramid A triangular diagram that show an ecosystem’s loss of energy.
