| Term | Definitions |

| Adaptation | A characteristic that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. |
| Species | A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring. |
| Evolution | The process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that a new species sometimes arise. |
| Population | Groups of individuals of the same species living in the same place. |
| Fossil | The remains or physical evidence of an organism perserved by geological processes. |
| Fossil record | A historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the Earth's crust. |
| Sediments | Particles of sand, dust, or soil which are carried by wind and water and are deposited in layers on top of the Earth's crust. |
| Tree of Life | A model or diagram that scientist use to show ancestry between all living organisms, past and present. |
| Mammals | A living organism from the animal kingdom that breathe air, give birth to live young, and produce milk. |
| DNA and skeletal structures | Two forms of evidence that show when groups of organisms have common ancestors. |
