| decomposition | breakdown of substances into simpler molecular substances |
| succession | replacement of one type of community by another at a single place over a period of time |
| biome | large region characterized by specific type of climate and certain types of plants and animals |
| estuary | area where fresh water from rivers mixes with salt water from the ocean |
| nonrenewable resource | resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which tis is consumed |
| biodiversity | number and variety of organisms in a given area during a specific period of time |
| conservation | perservation and wise use of natural resources |
| natural resource | any natural material that is used for humans, such as water, petroleum, minerals, forests, and animals |
| pollution | unwanted change in the environment caused by substances or forms of energy |
| commensalism | relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected |
| mutualism | relationship between two species in which both species benefits |
