Cell Functions-MP
Use to study organelles and their functions and also cell processes
| Organelle | function |
|---|---|
| producer | organism that makes its own food. Plants are examples |
| consumer | organism that can't make their own food |
| photosynthesis | when producers change light energy into chemical energy |
| active transport | when materials require energy to move through a cell membrane...transport proteins are used in this |
| passive transport | the movement of particles across the cell membrane by diffusion...uses NO energy |
| nucleus | holds DNA & controls activities of the cells |
| cell membrane | seperates cell from surroundings; regulates what leaves and enters |
| nucleur envelope | selectively permeable, surrounds the nucleus, protects the DNA inside the nucleus |
| nucleolus | makes ribosomes |
| cytoplasm | contains important organells and made of 80% water |
| mitochondria | change the chemical energy stored in food, into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use |
| chloroplast | traps sunlight and converts it into energy-only in plant cells |
| ribosomes | creates inactive protein, found on ER and in the cytoplasm |
| lysosomes | only in animal cells, contain digestive enzymes |
| RER | transports materials through the inside of the cell; proteins synthesized |
| SER | transports materials through the inside of the cell |
| Golgi Body | modifies, collects, packages,& distributes molecules |
| Vacuole | bigger in plants, storage area for water, food and waste products |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | extension of the nuclear membrane, canals that move substances such as proteins |
| cell wall | permeable, non-living layer in plant cells only, gives plant structure |
