What is vaccination? The deliberate exposure to antigenic material which activates the immune system to make an immune response and provide immunity.
A person who has been vaccinated has _________ ___________ ________ Artificial active immunity
How does the immune system react to the antigenic material? Manufactures antibodies and memory cells.
What forms on antigenic material can be used in vaccination? Whole live organisms (usually not as harmful as those that cause the disease), a harmless version of the pathogenic organism, a dead pathogen, prepartation of the antigens from a pathogen, some harmless toxin.
How can vaccination be achieved? Via injection or can be taken orally.
What is herd vaccination? The use of a vaccine to provide immunity to all or almost all of the population at risk.
What is ring vaccination? Vaccinating all the people in the immediate vicinity of the new cases (may be people in surrounded houses, or even the whole village or town)
What is active immunity? The immunity achieved by activation of the immune system.
What is passive immunity? Provided by antibodies that have not been manufactured stimulating the recipients immune system (antibodies may be provided by mother across the placenta or via breast milk).
What is natural immunity? It is gained in the normal course of living processes. May be gained as a result of an infection that stimulates an immune response.
What is artificial immunity? Gained by deliberate exposure to antibodies or antigens.
