Respiratory System Definitions

| alveolus | Tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles. |
| bronchi | The 2 tubes that branch off of the trachea. |
| diaphragm | The large, dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs which aids breathing. |
| epiglottis | The skin flap that directs air and food to the proper channel. |
| larynx | voice box; contains vocal cords |
| lung | Bronchi branch many times, getting smaller and ending tiny spherical air sacs (alveoli). |
| nose | The path which oxygen enters the lungs. |
| trachea | tube-like structure made of cartilage (windpipe) |
| vocal cord | One of two small bands of muscle within the larynx. These muscles vibrate to produce the voice. |
