Broad ligament is made up of: Mesometrium and Mesovarium
Mesometrium inferior to the ovary, anchored to the uterus
Mesovarium found between the fallopian tube and the ovary
Fallopian Tube carries the ovum and is connected medially (distally) to the uterus; it is built of smooth muscle and ciliated epithelium
Infundibulum ciliated; connects the fimbrae to the ampulla
Stratum Functionalis Thickens during menstrual cycle in prep for implantation; shed during menstration
Stratum Basalis If implantation doesn’t occur, the Basalis forms new Functionalis
Cardinal Ligaments From Cervix and Vagina to lateral pelvic walls
Round Ligaments Anchor the Uterus inferiorly to the Labia Majora and the anterior body wall
Uterosacral Ligaments Bilateral; anchor the Uterus to the Sacrum
Vagina Femal copulatory organ. Has 3 Tunics 1.Adventitia- Deepest; Connective tissue 2.Muscularis- Middle; Smooth muscle. 3. Mucosa- Superficial; stratified squamous to resist abrasion of intercourse.
Clitoris Small structure of erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa only) becomes erect during arousal
Greater Vestibular Glands Secrete mucus for lubrication during intercourse
Rectouterine Pouch Sometimes eggs get lost and degenerate here; site of ectopic pregnancy if fertilized
Alveoli Produces breast milk
Lactiferous Duct After milk is produced it is secreted into this structure
Lactiferous Sinus an enlarged area where milk is emptied just prior to exiting at the nipple.
Areola Area surrounding the nipple. Darkens during pregnancy, supposedly to serve as a target for the baby to zero in on.
