MCBL - Genes
Genetics and Human Inheritance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Genetics | is the division of biology that is concerned with inheritance, or the method of passing on these characteristics |
| Genes | the factors determining the inherited characteristics of an individual |
| Alleles | different forms of a gene for a particular trait |
| Dominant | an allele that masks the phenotypic expression of anther allele for the same trait “R” |
| Recessive | an allele that is not expressed in the phenotype of a heterozygous individual “r” |
| Homologous chromosomes | a chromosome pair containing genes for the same trait |
| Homozygous | having two identical alleles for a trait |
| Heterozygous | having two different alleles for a trait |
| Diploid | an organism or cell that has two of each type of chromosome, one inherited from the mom and the other from the dad. |
| Haploid | an organism or cell that has only one copy of each chromosome |
| Genotype | the particular genes that make up the genetic material of the cells of an individual |
| Phenotypes | the observable expression of a genotype. The phenotype is what you see and is described by words. |
| Monohybrid cross | involves inheritance of only one character or trait |
