Muscle are specialized to contract, they contain filaments of the proteins actin and myosin
Skeletal Muscle : made of bundles of long fibers (cells); it is multinucleated (syncytial) contains mitochondria, attached primarily to skeleton Functions: voluntary movements, action potentials are mediated by motor neurons
Smooth Muscle spindle-shaped, contains a single nucleus, LACKS striations, Lines the wall of the gut, uterus, blood vessels Functions: involuntary movements
Cardiac Muscle single nucleus, striations (less prominent), branched cells, intercalated disks: contain gap junctions Function: generate action potentials on their own
Neurons specialized to initiate, integrate and conduct electrical signals to other cells
Nerve Tissue a collection of neurons (brian or spinal cord)
Nerve : is formed by axons from many neurons being packaged together with connective tissues (Nissl bodies)
Dendrite functions as receiving signals from the receptors or other neurons and plays an important role in integration of information
