Large white blood cells. They migrate into the connective tissue where they become macrophages and move to kill invading enemies. Monocytes
A type of white blood cell that eats bacteria as part of the immune response to infection. It's name means "big eater." They are versatile cells; besides acting as scavengers, they secrete a wide variety of chemical signals. Macrophage
The immune system's emergency signal flare. Chemicals called complements are dissolved in the fluid surrounding most body tissue. Macrophages follow these chemical signals to find invading bacteria. C3a
Big (macro) molecules that help immune system cells find where they need to go. For example, they mark the part of a blood vessel near an infection. Selectins
