Parts of the immune system

| What is a monocyte? | A large white blood cell that migrates into connective tissue where it becomes a macrophage and moves to kill invading enemies. |
| What is a macrophage? | A type of white blood cell that eats bacteria as part of the immune system response to infection. Macrophage means "big eater." |
| What is a neutrophil? | A type of white blood cell within the innate immune system. They destroy many kinds of invading bacteria and other types of attackers that carry markers showing whether they are friends or foes. They attack quickly and in large numbers. |
| What is a mast cell? | A resident cell of several types of tissues and plays an important protective role in wound healing and defense against pathogens. |
| What is a fibroblast? | A type of stem cell which circulates through the tissue and can transform into many types of cells, allowing them to repair damage to connective tissue or to heal wounds. |
