What is Variation?

OCR BIOLOGY - Variation in plants and animals.

QuestionAnswer
What is variation? Variation is the presence of variety or differences between individuals.
Define inter-specific variation Variation that exists between species and is the basis of classification.
Define intra-specific variation. Variation that exists within a species.
What are the 3 ways that variation can happen? Meosis, Sexual Reprodution and Mutation
What does Meosis do? Shuffles the alleles so that the gametes contain a mixture.
What does Sexual reproduction do? The male gametes fuse randomly with female gametes.
What is discontinuous variation? No, or few intermiadiates and are controlled by a single gene.
Give some examples of discontinuous variation. Earlobes, tongue rolling
What is continuous variation? The intermiadiates present and controlled by many genes.
Give some examples of discontinuous variation. Height, weight
Which type of variation is influenced by the environent? Continuous
What type of graph represents discontinuous variation? Bar Graph
What type of graph represents continuous variation? Normal distribution.
