| phenotype | an organism's physical appearance for a specific gene |
| chromosome | coiled structure of DNA where genetic information is stored |
| homozygous | having two identical alleles for a single trait (sometimes called purebred) |
| heterozygous | having two different alleles for a single trait(sometimes called hybrid) |
| dominant | a trait that will appear in the offspring even if only one of the parents contributes it. Shown by using a CAPITAL letter |
| recessive | a trait that will appear in the offspring only if both of the parents contribute it. Shown by using a lower case letter. |
