What is meiosis? process that is characteristic of sexual reproduction.
What 2 important purposes does meiosis serve? it keeps the number of chromosomes from doubling each generation, and it provides genetic diversity in offspring.
What is mitosis? process of cell division that occurs in all somatic cells.
What happens in meiosis 1? recombination/ separation of homologous chromosomes.
What happens in meiosis 2? separating chromatids.
What are the stages of meiosis? Prophase 1, Metaphase 1, anaphase 1, and telophase.
How many haploids does one daploid cell produce.? 4
What stages follow the first stage of meiosis? prophase2, metaphase2, anaphase2, and telophase2.
How many cells does meiosis produce? 4
What is meiosis part of? part of sexual reproduction
When does crossing over occur in meiosis? during prophase1 when 2 chromosomes pair up and exchange parts of there dna.
What does crossing over provide? genetic diversity between the parents and their offspring.
When does genetic variation occur.? when alleles are randomly sorted during meiosis
What are silent mutations? mutations that have no effect on organism.
how many sets of chromosomes does somatic cells have.? 2
What kind of cells are gametes? sex cells.
What is a gene? is a discrete unit of information on the DNA that codes for one protein, perhaps one of the many enzymes needed by our bodies.
When does dna replication take place? before meiosis.
how many cell divisions does meiosis consist of? Meiosis1 and 2
what is the pairing of homologous chromosomes called? cinapsis
what happens in metaphase1? homologous chromosomes line up
