Glucose is a monosaccharide what does it consist of in each molecule? 6 carbon atoms
What are the two forms of glucose? Alpha and Beta
When monosaccharides join together what do they form? Disaccharides and Polysaccharides
What are three examples of polysaccharides? Starch, glycogen and Cellulose
What is the main function of a carbohydrate? Provides energy
What are the type of bonds that hold the alpha glucose molecules together and what do they form? Glycosidic bonds and it forms amylose
Why are carbohydrates converted into glucose? They are converted into glucose so it can metabolized by living organisms and used as a source of energy
What are the functions of carbohydrates? Carbohydrates are a source of energy, an energy store (starch) and structure (cellulose)
What elements do carbohydrates contain? Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What are the characteristics of monosaccharides containing between three and six carbon atoms? Soluble in water, sweet tasting and form crystals
What are the simplest carbohydrates known as? Monosaccharides
What is the word equation for respiration? Glucose+ Oxygen-> Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy that is used to form ATP
What is the role of disaccharides? Sugar is obtained when starch is broken down in hydrolysis reactions. It is then split to glucose for respiration
