2 common features of defense mechanisms They all (except suppression) operate on unconscious level. They deny, falsify, or distort reality to make it less threatening.
Difference between coping skills and defense mechanisms Coping- decrease stress, decrease anxiety, conscious. Defense mech- subconscious.
Repression Temporary or long term exclusion of unwanted experiences from conscious awareness. -Not remembered, pushed into conscious part of mind.
Denial Escaping unpleasant realities by ignoring their existence.
Projection Unconsciously rejecting emotionally unacceptable personal features & attributing them to other ppl, objects, or situations. -Frequently the element of blame.
Reaction Formation AKA overcompensation. Acting the opposite of what you feel unconsciously.

Displacement "Kicking the cat". Fueled by anxiety and stress. Transfer of emotions associated w/ a particular person, object, or situation onto another person, object, or situation that is nonthreatening.
Undoing Makes up for an act or communication.
Sublimation Only defense mech. that is positive. Unconscious process of substituting constructive & socially acceptable activity for strong impulses that are not acceptable in original form.
Intellectualization Using logic to avoid feelings. Focused of facts and data, not personal feelings.
Compensation Making up for a personal deficiency.
4 y/o boy w/ new baby brother starts sucking his thumb again: Regression
Suppression Conscious denial of disturbing situation or feeling.
Young adult explains he had to drive home from a party after drinking alcohol because he had to feed his dog: Rationalization

Individual drinks alcohol when self-esteem is low to diffuse discomfort temporarily: Compensation
Woman who feels lump in breast shortly before leaving for a 3-wk vacation puts the info in the back of her mind until after returning home: Suppression
