Characteristics of schizophrenia and nursing management for persons w/ schizo

| Definition of psychotic | Consists of someone having delusions, hallucinations, or bizarre thoughts or behaviors. |
| Positive symptoms of schizophrenia | Positive symptoms- exaggeration of normal. Normal social functioning. Respond better to Tx. Normal CT scan. Acute onset. |
| Delusions (+ symptom) | False belief. Can not change by giving logic. Don't say "tell me more about your delusions". |
| Thought broadcasting (+ symptom) | Thoughts can be heard by others. (wearing hood or foil on head). |
| Concrete thinking (+ symptom) | Can not be abstract. |
| Loose associations (+ symptom) | A thought disorder in which series of ideas are presented with loosely apparent or completely inapparent logical connections. |
| Neologism (+ symptom) | Made up words. |
| Clang association (+ symptom) | Rhyming ("be", buzzing) |
| Word salad (+ symptom) | Words w/ no connection. |
| Hallucinations (+ symptom) | Seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, tasting things that are not real. |
| Illusion (+ symptom) | Seeing a real object or person as something else. |
| Boundary impairment (+ symptom) | Can't tell where they leave off & the other person or object starts. Depth perception impairment. |
| Depersonalization (+ symptom) | Out of body experience. Often refer to self in 3rd person. An observer of a situation, but it's actually them. |
| Derealization (+ symptom) | Real things in environment become unreal to them. |
| Waxy flexibility (+ symptom) | Posturing. |
