Vocabulary review- circulatory system

QuestionAnswer
cardiovascular system body system that consists of the heart, blood and blood vessels
heart hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body
atrium receives blood that comes into the heart (upper chamber of the heart)
ventricle pumps blood out of the heart (lower chamber of the heart)
valve flap of tissue that prevents blood from flowing backwards
pacemaker a group of cells in the right atrium that sends out a signal that makes the heart contract
artery blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
capillary tiny vessels where substances are exchanged between the blood and body cells
vein blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart
aorta the longest artery in the body
plasma the liquid part of the blood
red blood cell carry oxygen to the body cells
hemoglobin iron-containing protein that binds to oxygen molecules
white blood cell fights infections
platelet cell fragment that helps blood clot
lymphatic system system of veinlike vessels that returns fluid to the bloodstream
lymph the fluid in the lymphatic system
lymph node small knobs of tissue that filter lymph as it passes through
