| Hypothesis | is a possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question |
| variables | all factors that can change in an experiment |
| controlled experiment | an experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time |
| gathering data | requires observations to be made |
| which senses may be used for observations | all of them (sight,hearing,touch, and smell) |
| balance | tool used to measure the mass of objects |
| graduated cylinder | a beaker marked in intervals that is used to measure volume |
| miroscope | a tool used to produce magnified images of smaller objects |

| test tube | a cylindrical tube, usually smaller then a beaker |

| manipulated variable | variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis |
| independent variable | manipulated variables can also be called this |
| responding variable | factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable |
| dependent variable | responding variable can be called this |
| constants | all factors and variables besides the manipulated are responding variables are called this |
