An Introduction to Carbohydrates
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| monosaccharide | a simple sugar |
| Triose | three-carbon sugars |
| pentose | five-carbon sugars. (Ex= ribose) |
| polysaccharides | polymers that form when monoaccharides are linked together |
| complex carbohydrates | another name for polysacchrides |
| glycosidic linkage | a covalent bond which results from a condensation reaction between two hydroxyl groups |
| starch | alpha-glucose monomers that are joined by glycosidic links. unbranched (amylose) and branched (amylopectin) helixes |
| gylcogen | same as starch. 3 times as many branches though |
| cellulose | the main component of the cell wall in plants. parallel stands from hydrogen bonds. beta-glucose monomers |
| chitin | stiffens the cell walls of fungi |
| Peptidoglycan | gives bacteria cell walls strength and firmness |
