Cell Resp.

These flashcards are from my 9th grade Biology class for a BCR

QuestionAnswer
Define Cellular respiration. The process in which mitochondria breaks down food molecules to provide ATP.
Define anaerobic. No oxygen is needed / present.
Define aerobic Oxygen is needed / present.
Define glycolysis. The process in which glucose is broken down, a 6 - carbon compound is made into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid, and a 3 - carbon compound.
Define citric acid / the Kreb cycle. It is a series of chemical reactions used to generate energy through oxidation.
Define lactic acid fermentation. One of the processes that supplies energy when oxygen is scarce.
Define alcoholic fermentation. Used by yeast cells to produce carbon dioxide and ethyl alcohol.
Where does the first stage of cell respiration (glycolysis) take place? Does it require oxygen? Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm. It is anaerobic.
Where does the citric acid cycle take place? Does it require oxygen? The citric acid cycle takes place in the mitochondria. It is aerobic.
What is the electron transport chain? The electron transport chain is the third stage of cellular respiration - it carries energized electrons to another location in the cell for more chemical reactions.
When does NAD+ form NADPH? When it accepts 2 electrons.
Where does the electron transport chain take place? In the inner membrane of the mitochondria.
What are the main electron carriers in the electron transport chain? NADH and FADH2.
What are characteristics of photosynthesis? Photosynthesis: Food is synthesized Energy from the sun is stored in the glucose Oxygen is given off Carbon Dioxide is taken in Produces sugars from PGAL Requires light Occurs only in the presence of chlorophyll
What are characteristics of cellular respiration? Cellular Respiration: Food is broken down Carbon Dioxide is given off Oxygen is taken in Produces Carbon Dioxide, and water No light is required Occurs in all living cells
Does alcoholic fermentation need oxygen? It is anaerobic.
What is the equation of Cellular Respiration? C.6.H.12 + 6CO.2 => 6CO.2 + 6H.2O + e- + 36 - 38 ATP's

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
